Interest calculator: savings plan, loan and simple interest
Three calculators under one roof: a savings plan with compound interest, German tax and inflation, the payment or rate of a loan, and simple interest on a fixed sum.
Savings plan with compound interest
You enter a starting amount, a monthly amount, an interest rate and a term. The calculator compounds at the period your bank uses and shows the effective annual rate. Flat-rate withholding tax and the solidarity surcharge come off the interest, as far as the saver's allowance does not apply. Inflation converts the final value into today's money.
Interest can be credited anywhere from yearly to daily. The more often, the further the effective annual rate lies above the nominal rate, and the calculator tells you what it is. You also choose whether the monthly amount is paid in at the start or at the end of the month. You can change the saver's allowance or set it to zero if it is already used up at another bank.
Loan: payment, rate and repayment
For an annuity loan you either work out the term from interest plus initial repayment, as German banks quote it, or the payment or the rate for a fixed term. The repayment schedule shows how the payment shifts from interest to repayment as the remaining debt falls. At the end you see the total paid and the total interest.
Simple interest
With simple interest, interest accrues only on the starting capital. The comparison with compound interest shows how much you gain from interest earning interest.
Frequently asked questions about the interest calculator
What is the difference between simple and compound interest?
Simple interest accrues only on the starting capital. With compound interest, the interest is added to the balance and earns interest itself.
How much tax is due on savings interest?
Flat-rate withholding tax plus the solidarity surcharge, after deducting the saver's allowance if you have given your bank an exemption order.
How does the compounding period matter?
If interest is compounded more than once a year, actual yearly growth lies above the nominal rate. The calculator shows you the effective annual rate.
Can I change the saver's allowance?
Yes. Set it to zero if it is already used up. Couples assessed jointly have double the amount.
What does initial repayment mean?
The share of the loan you repay in the first year on top of the interest. Together with the interest rate it gives the payment.
