ETF savings plan calculator: what is left after tax?

The ETF calculator projects how a fund grows over the years when you pay in once or every month. Running costs come off the growth, then German tax, and at the end you see what really stays in your pocket, in today's money too.

Choosing funds and paying in

You choose one or more funds, such as global, US, Europe, emerging markets, sectors or bonds, each with a measured return and fee. No fund is preselected, the decision is yours. Alternatively you enter your own assumptions. The running fee (TER) comes off the return before anything is compounded.

You enter a starting amount, a monthly amount or both and set how long the money stays invested. You can also choose whether the monthly amount is paid in at the start or at the end of the month: paid in at the start, each instalment earns a month more of return. The result shows what you paid in, how much growth after costs comes on top and what tax falls on it.

Expected and range

The Expected projection draws a smooth line at the average return. Range simulates many possible paths with the fund's measured fluctuation and shows where most of them end. Exchange rates, withholding tax on dividends and trading costs are not modelled.

Tax and inflation

The calculator takes into account the flat-rate withholding tax with solidarity surcharge, the partial exemption for equity funds under § 20 InvStG, the advance lump sum (Vorabpauschale) and the saver's allowance. You can set the saver's allowance to zero if it is already used up elsewhere. With inflation you see the final amount in today's money.

Frequently asked questions about the ETF calculator

How much tax is due on ETF gains?

The flat-rate withholding tax plus the solidarity surcharge. For funds that mostly hold equities, part of the gain stays tax-free under § 20 InvStG, for bond funds it does not.

What is the Vorabpauschale?

A minimum return that the fund is treated as having paid out each year and that is taxed. At the sale it is deducted from the gain so that nothing is taxed twice.

Is the projection a forecast?

No. Past returns do not predict the future. The range shows how far results spread from the order of good and bad years alone.

Which costs are included?

The fund's running fee (TER), which comes off the return. Trading costs, withholding tax on dividends and exchange rates are not modelled.

Can I compare several ETFs?

Yes, with the same payments, each with its own return and its own fee.
