Trier

Widely called Germany's oldest city, founded as a Roman provincial capital whose gate, baths and amphitheatre still stand and draw visitors from across the world. Wine from the surrounding Moselle valley, tourism and the city's role as a regional centre for the countryside around it carry the modern economy.
