Schwerin

The capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, its lakeside romantic-style castle on an island in the middle of the city one of the most photographed buildings in Germany and now the seat of the state parliament. A modest, administration-led economy sits around a historic centre that survived the war largely intact, in one of the country's more sparsely populated states.
