Salzgitter

A Lower Saxony city formed by merging a cluster of small towns and villages around a large steelworks, giving it an unusually spread-out, polycentric layout with no single historic centre. Steel and vehicle-parts manufacturing still employ a large share of the workforce, more than in most German cities its size.
