Rostock

The largest city on Germany's Baltic coast, its Hanseatic old town rebuilt around a university that has trained sailors, engineers and doctors for centuries. Shipbuilding, once the backbone of the East German economy here, has shrunk since reunification, while the port, wind-energy manufacturing and the beach resort on its edge now carry more of the weight.
