Recklinghausen

A northern Ruhr city that grew around coal mining until the last pits closed, leaving behind a green, forested edge to the region and an annual open-air theatre festival that draws visitors well beyond the Ruhr. The economy today rests more on services and public administration than on the industry that built the city.
