Oberhausen

A Ruhr city built almost entirely on coal and steel until both collapsed in the late twentieth century, leaving behind a landscape the city has since turned into parks, museums and a landmark gasometer used as an exhibition hall. The old steelworks site is now one of Europe's largest shopping and leisure complexes, and services have largely replaced the vanished heavy industry.
