Marl

A northern Ruhr city built up rapidly around a major chemical works, giving it a heavily industrial skyline unusual even for the Ruhr, alongside sprawling postwar housing estates built to house the workforce. The chemical industry remains the city's largest employer by a wide margin, and the economy's fortunes are closely tied to that one sector's health.
