Magdeburg

The state capital of Saxony-Anhalt on the Elbe, rebuilt almost from scratch after wartime destruction into a wide, modern layout with little of the old townscape left. The economy leans on mechanical engineering, chemicals and logistics, continuing a tradition that goes back to the city's native son Otto von Guericke.
