Herne

A dense, compact city at the centre of the Ruhr, once thick with coal mines and now among the smallest in area of any German city its population size, which leaves it little room to reinvent itself the way its larger neighbours have. Services and small manufacturing have replaced the vanished pits, though the transition has left the city among the poorer corners of the region.
