Heidelberg

Home to Germany's oldest university, its romantic hilltop castle and old town on the Neckar have drawn travellers for centuries and made tourism a permanent fixture of the local economy. Biotechnology and pharmaceutical research clustered around the university and a cancer research centre now sit alongside tourism as the city's other main pillar.
