Hagen

A hilly city on the southern edge of the Ruhr where the region's industrial belt gives way to the wooded Sauerland, shaped for over a century by steel, cables and metalworking. Like much of the Ruhr it has struggled since heavy industry declined, and the economy now leans more on logistics and smaller manufacturing firms than on the large works that once dominated it.
