Gießen

A Hesse university city on the Lahn, rebuilt in a modern style after heavy wartime bombing left little of the old townscape standing, its economy now dominated by the university and the hospitals and research institutes around it. A comparatively young population, driven by the student body, gives the city centre a livelier character than its industrial surroundings might suggest.
