Bottrop

A Ruhr city at its northern edge that closed the last hard-coal mine in Germany, ending an industry that had defined the whole region for generations, and has since rebranded itself around renewable energy and green urban redevelopment. Services and smaller manufacturing have taken over from mining, and the city markets its post-industrial transformation as a model for the wider Ruhr.
